Here’s the thing Bernie’s peeps have to remember about political gaffes like Bernie praising Castro’s literacy program … their POV is not an accurate barometer for judging the electorate at large. That’s why it might not matter that the Anti-Castro Cuban community in South Florida is fading away and younger Cuban-Americans skew Democratic and Americans in the aggregate were cool with Obama’s now-partially scuttled opening to Cuba.
Despite all that, this clip from 60 Minutes is going to be weaponized by the GOP’s far superior messaging machine … a machine that has churned out a number of rat-copulated wins using titillating, often-specious culture war ammo just like this. And, despite the fact that YOU might think this is silly and YOU might think America should move on from what YOU regard as Cold War, red-baiting bullshit … it is pro’lly going to work … and not just in South Florida.
This will be turned to memes and headlines much like those I’ve seen mushrooming around conservative media over the last two months … “scary stuff” about the coming fight to keep America from succumbing to gun-grabbing socialism and its gulag-filled future where God-fearing Americans will be forced to eat their pets like Venezuelans.
Look, I get it … the country is changing. At least, it was until Trump was elected to change it back. But as we’ve seen, fear of socio-cultural shifts usually trumps policy-based appeals based on rational assessments of the common good. And that’s the rub … the GOP has always had the advantage when it comes to political messaging. With a few notable exceptions (in 1992, 2006, 2008 & 2018), they’ve been laying waste to the Democrats since 1968.
Really, the GOP is the Terminator of political messaging. It can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear! And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead!
And that’s the biggest question of all: How prepared are Bernie’s campaign and the Democratic Party at large to counter the messaging onslaught that will come next September when the massive oppo file they’ve got on Sanders is unleashed on an American people who, based on the amount of money corporations spend on it, are still compelled to buy megatons of future landfill fodder by something as transparent as advertising?
The one wildcard for Bernie, though, is the possibility that Trump has made saying “outrageous” things okay for everyone, and not just for himself. Things previously considered political suicide might now just be signs of authenticity. I guess we’ll find out if the exception is now the rule.Tweet
